term 4

Year 9 Creative Media Animation – Term 04 Mr Andrews

Task 4: e-pub, commentary and poster self-reflection and evaluation:

Part One: Discuss your feelings about the e-pub, poster and commentary task:
1.    Are you satisfied with the final result?
Yeah I am pretty happy with my final result, I put a lot of effort into it and am happy with my video and evaluation on my film.
2.    Did the e-pub require more/less time than you originally thought?
It required more time then I originally thought as I thought that putting my video and words into the epub would only take one lesson but I ended up running over time and had to stay back after school at Mr. Andrews expense. But I ended up finishing it and am very happy that I was able to.
3.    Would like to change any aspects of your final project (layout, links, images, video and audio content, colour scheme etc)?
If I could change anything in my finished project I would try to put my voice overs over my movie instead of separately as it would make the epub easier to look at and easier to read and watch. I would also make my epub more colorful as it is a very boring color and isn’t very interesting to look at. Also if it was more colorful then it would suit my video better as my imovie is about shopping and shopping is colorful and fun.

4.    If you could start the project again what would you do differently?
I would defiantly manage my time more efficiently as I did take longer then I planned and didn’t quite use my class time as effectively as I could have. I would have also made my speech of a better quality as I kind of rushed writing it at the end and I became very stressed and if I managed my time better then I would have been able to finish my work to a better quality.

Part Two: Respond to each of the following dot points (using complete sentences or paragraphs). You should include as much detail as possible in your responses.

1.    Discuss whether your e-pub and poster have turned out the way you pictured them?
I imagined my poster to be the way it turned out but my epub didn’t turn out how I wanted, I anted it to be more colorful then it is. I pictured my poster to be the exact was it is with big bold purple writing and a colorful background picture. My epub should have turned out more colorful thenit is but even so it still looks pretty good.
2.    Explain whether your e-pub and poster clearly depicts the style of your animation and describe some specific design principles that you have used to achieve this;
My epub and poster do clearly describe the style of animation that I chose. Both are very colorful and very simple at the same time. My poster makes up for the colorful part of my imovie such as the shopping bags and the clothes, which are all very colorful and bright and the epub makes up for the very simple parts of the imovie such as when she is in bed sleeping in the plain sheets.
3.    Describe any problems or technical difficulties you encountered while creating your director commentaries in GarageBand. These may include; sound or video issues, corrupt or missing files, difficulty using the iBooks Author or GarageBand software, problems importing/exporting files, etc;
Some problems that I had whilst the making of my epub and poster was that for the poster it took me forever to find a colour and style in writing that stood out from the backround I tried many colours and fonts but in the end I ended up using a bright purple and a very bold font that stood out. The writing on the poster ended up being very visible after many trial and errors. In my epub I had problems with time management and I also had some problems with putting the sound into the movie which was being placed into the epub.
4.    Did you have all of the necessary resources to complete your e-pub and poster or did you have to create new materials?
In the making of my epub I had to make the poster for my ibook which would be the title page in the book. It took overall a whole lesson and a half to create but It was a big part of my assignment and I am very happy with the end product. Also I had to create my epub and the voice recordings of my directors commentary which also took one and a half lessons. Putting the whole project together was a bit of a rush but I managed to do it in one lesson.
5.    List the steps you used to plan and develop your project;
·      Firstly I figured out how many parts I was going to separate them into
·      I wrote out my directors commentary on both of the parts of my imovie
·      I created my epub
·      Recorded the directors commentary and put it onto my epub
·      Got my Imovie off the computer and placd it ont my epub
6.    Clarify any time-management issues you encountered during the creative process and describe the steps you took to improve in this area;
I had encountered many time management issues during the process of writing my speech as it took longer then it should have and took up time that I was meant to be spending on my epub, therefor my epub was not to the best of quality as I spen most of my time on my poster and directors commentary.
7.    Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection throughout your project. i.e. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs and think about whether it looks like a whole terms worth of work);
I have not completed enough reflections or proof of work on my blog this term. This has caused problems as I barley posted this term and with out back ups on my movies, posters and epubs and no hardly any blog posts I haven’t been able to do things to the best of my ability

We got taught what an e-hub was, it is literally an ibook. Our assaignment this term is to create an e-hub on our iMovie that me and my partner sofia made in term 3. we have to have directors commentary and split the movie up into scenes, which will be a bit hard for me as i lost the book.

Creative Media Essay

For our term four assessment we have to analise one of three animations. All of the animations were weird and strange but the film factory stood out to me the most and made the most sense to me.
An animator called Miwa Matreyek in 2009 created the animation “Factory”.

This animation was very different and unusual to watch. At first the video was confusing but once you peel back the layers there were many clear morals being shown. The animation had many objects that are featured in the film. Some include literal objects, metaphors, sounds, color’s and shades. Some of the Literal objects are Factories, Buildings, Smoke, Tools, Hands, Scientists, Airships blender, Machines and Computers. Some others Literal objects are metaphors, which are a large hand that picks up things, can be a representation of the machinery, which picks up objects like a hand does. Also when the hands are walking around the factory it symbolizes that machines are taking over the factory world. When I first look at the animation I see a big gloomy factory with many people walking around it with a sad and glum look, as though it is a very depressing place to work. Another one of main things that appeared to me was, at the beginning of the animation, the building was producing a lot of pollution. This shows me that as more and more factories are using machines to do the work the world is going to get much more polluted and dirty. The overall impression of the mood in this film is that it is a miserable work environment and all the employees seem very depressed and low. The colors shown in the film are black and white. The shapes displayed in the animation are very sharp and edgy giving the film a dangerous feel. The types of lines and texture used in the work are very jagered and intense, this is due to the mood being very acute and grave. You don’t know what time of day it is as it is inside a factory and you don’t get given an idea, but I am guessing it is during the day as most factories operate during throughout day.

The artist has used colors and shades in the animation to show the mood. Miwa chose the colors black and white, as it gives the film a very plain, cold, harsh and repetitive effect. The shapes in the film also give the same impression as they are all rugged and edgy which shows that it isn’t a very nice work environment and the machines aren’t very pleasant to work with.

The sounds are just as repetitive as the colors, most of the sounds are machines working, tapping, and beeping, metal clashing together and there is nothing to unusual for a factory environment. The sounds make the animation more realistic and compliment the motion of the images. The lines in the work have been used to show how savage the work environment is and what types of surroundings people these days have to work in. The textures in this piece of animation are similar to the lines as the textures used are very rough giving the same idea to the viewers that the work is very hard and treacherous. The artist, Miwa has used light and dark tones in this film to show the better and worse areas of the factory that people work in. It could mean that the darker areas are more dangerous and the lighter areas are more sheltered and guarded. The artist hasn’t used the tones in an abstract way.  The overall visual effect and mood of the film has been achieved by the use of elements such as color, shape and tone and without these elements the animation could have turned out very different.

The artist made a very clear statement throughout this animation. They wanted the audience to know how repetitive peoples everyday work lives are. Adults are sometimes “trapped” in their own jobs, as they have to support their family, reflecting on this animation highlights to me the importance of gaining a good education and securing a job that your passionate about instead of being confined to a job that is monotonous or with limited job satisfaction. Children should make the most of their education and do subjects that interest them. Children should make the right choices when they’re younger so that they don’t end up in a work environment that has no life to it and have colorless and boring days. They should do something that they enjoy, and know that they do have a choice and that those choices can deeply effect their future. I feel sad and sorry for the work employees as I would not like to be in their situation and it is obvious that if they had the chance they would certainly change their job. Miwa used the style of animation to describe message very clearly.

I believe that the animation has value as it shows what it is like for people who have not done well enough in school and might not have gone to university, maybe due to money problems. They are one of many people who have found it hard to find work with semi decent pay so that they can support their family with the bare basics. I believe that this piece of work does communicate a very strong idea and it would be very much valued by the viewers of the film. This animation does lack some worth and maybe the artist could have made the machines more sharp and rugged to prove a more powerful point of how It is a very unpleasant place to work.

To conclude Miwa Matreyek makes very bottomless and emotional animations that when first seen don’t seem like very much but as you look deeper into them some very meaningful morals and themes are displayed. They teach the person watching it a valuable lesson.  In this animation the work is hard and backbreaking. There are elements of art in the film, but many of the scenes are repetitive and use the same shapes and tones. The animations main focus is mainly about people working in a harsh environment and it has a very strong story line.

Miwa Matreyeks film “Factory” sends a very powerfull message to viewers in regards to lifestyle choices, this animation used significant elements of line, color, tone, and sound which had a profound impact on me, as a veiwer of this animation.

For our assessment in term 4 we have to analyse on of three music videos by Miwa Matreyek. All of the three animations were weird and strange but factory stood out to me the most. What is mainly shown in the film is the machinery and the employees working inside the workshop. The shapes of the machinery is sharp and rough. The colours in the video were dark and dull and showed  that the factory was not a nice environment to work at. My overall impression of the mood of this sequence is that it is a depressing and sad place and none of the employees seem very excited or enthusiastic to be working in the workshop.

this lesson sofia and i took the time to put out videos from i stop motion into i movie and it didn't quite work so we had to convert into the the old i movie which dosn't really matter. we added music and it all fitted perfectly. Mr Andrews helped us put the music on and taught us hot to make the music and video fade out which looked pretty cool and we wouldn't have been able to do that skill by ourselves.
Both sofia and i had to learnt how to export our main video so that we could give it to mr andrews. he has helped us a lot teaching us many things to do with i stop motion that if we didn't know we defiantly wouldn't have been able to pull of this i stop motion picture. at first we had trouble exporting but he taught us how to export them so we finished all the videos and i went home and tried to put it onto my blog but an image saying there were errors during the upload. i have tried many times but i will try again tonight. the only problem with the exported files would be that they were corrupted but that would be highly unlikely as when we handed our files into mr andrews they were fine.
